To The Daughter of Mountains*

*Parvati (Daughter ofMountains) is the name of God Shiva’s wife. In her earlier incarnation, the goddess was born as Dakshayani (Daughter of Daksha). According to Shiva cycles of myths, Daksha
performed a sacred yagna, a ritual of sacrifice, to which he invited all great gods but refused to invite Shiva as he was the friend of inauspicious demons, asuras. Against Shiva’s wish, Dakshayani goes to her father to expostulate with him and get her husband invited. But, when Daksha insults her in the presence of the gods, furious, she jumps into the fIames of the sacrifice. When the news ofher self-
immolation reaches Shiva, he sends his terrible aspect Virabhadra to wreak vengeance on Daksha and the other gods.

Separated from his Goddess, Shiva feels powerless and goes into severe austerities for ages. In the meantime, Dakshayani is reborn as Parvati. In the hope of reuniting with Shiva, she undertakes
intense austerities. The story of separation and reunion ends with their marriage and birth of the warrior god Kumara, who rescues gods from demons. This forms the story of Kalidasa’s poem, Kumara Sambhavam.

Shiva to his wife and beloved:

Go Daksha’s daughter,
These hundred-mountains-old snow
Will be waiting, without melting,

The blue snow lotuses will continue
To bloom in frozen, dark, caves
In the hope that you will return one day

Nandi and Bhringi**
My demon attendants will be dancing
Turning their hands into burning torches
Burning the lamp in their eyes
With the oil of their life-force
Moving to the beats of your returning steps
Beating the drums of their chest and stomach
Their stamping feet now reaching underworlds
So that the highest peaks begin to shake
The peaks rising and piercing skies…
They will leap and spin
Roll down tired and sweating
Rise up again and dance
In the hope of your return

Go now, Daksha’s daughter.

When were we kin,
I, a beggar by birth,
You, daughter of gods?
Get up, it is time
Bundle up all our memories
Of kisses and embraces

I will wait for you to return
In the cremation ground of my body
With this aged bull as my sole company
In the midst of burning biers

Without Shakti,
Shiva is lifeless;
The Ganga on his head will dry up
The moon in his forehead will wane

When you sat once
Leaning your head on my chest
Sun beams entered your dark hair
And, refracted, broke into rainows –

O whole world of rainbows
On the chest of the beggar
The kettle-drum man
Dwelling with the dead
In cremation grounds

Go now, Daksha’s daughter
The colossal flames in ten directions
Are calling you
The sacrifice hall of three worlds
Is calling you
The forgotten flames of cosmic destruction
Are calling you
To your death
I will survive, shamelessly

In the midst of clamour and commotion
In the midst of internal incantations
In the midst of the cruel banquet
Where gods eat human flesh
You will go asking:
‘Where is my lord, auspicious one?’
When giant flames consume you
Along with you are burnt down
Heavenly cows and trees
‘Ihe wish-fulfilling diamonds

In the midst of clamour and commotion
And ceaseless incantations
Hells will begin to roll in me
I am in the hell
Of my body, the cremation ground
Look!
Life has begun to course the dead
Turning tiny insects into giant cobras
Dancing with raised hoods

To the tune of the snake man’s flute
Listen!
The beats of thunder’s kettle-drum
Huge human-shaped lightening creepers

Volcanoes are erupting in all the oceans
Now is the season for the rain of blood
Of gentle breeze turning into a hurricane
Now, the tandava dance
Here he comes,
The lord of demons,
Virabhadra,***
The ocean of compassion infuriated
Deaf to the cries of goddesses,
He must have his revenge
Will cut down arrogant gods
Pull down the proud pillar of splendour

When the harvest of blood and vengeance ends,
When cries and incantations cease,
You will return
Wanting him and him alone
You will be reborn
As the daughter of mountains
Through the valleys
Along planes
Sporting in forests
Prattling with parrots and koyal birds
Playing with lions and tigers
Walking with yogis and alchemists
On the shores and banks
Of oceans and rivers of the world
reborn
Through the lanes and streets
Of green cities and prospering villages
You will come

In a million forms
Asking in a million voices;
O moonlight!
O sunlight!
O koyalbird!
O mango tree!
Tell me, all of you
Where is the road to the palace
Of my lord
Whose sight ends all my longings?

I will be waiting for you, love,
In yoga pose
In snow, deserts and cremation grounds

On that day
Humans turn divine
But for now, we have just this moment
One last embrace
One parting kiss

Arrange your curls.
Good bye,
Daksha’s daughter
