ಹೊಳೆವುದು ಹಠಾತ್ತನೊಂದೊಂದು ಚಿನ್ನದ ಗೆರೆ;

ನೀರ ಮೇಲಕ್ಕೊಂದು ಮಡಿ, ಕೆಳಕ್ಕೇಳು ಮಂಜಿನ ಶಿಖರಿ;
ಕಂತಿ ಕೈ ಬಡಿವ ಬೀಜಾಣುಜಾಲ;

ಉಚ್ಚಾಟನೆಯ, ತರ್ಪಣದ ತಂತ್ರ ಬಲ್ಲೆ, ಆದರು ಮಂತ್ರ ಮರತೆ;
ಪುರೋಹಿತರ ನೆಚ್ಚಿ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಬುದ್ಧಿಯಾದೆವೋ;

ಅಗೆವಾಗ್ಗೆ ಮೊದಲು ಕೋಶಾವಸ್ತೆ ಮಣ್ಣು;
ಇನ್ನಾದರೂ ಕೊಂಚ ಕಲಿಯಬೇಕು;

ಬಾವಿಯೊಳಗಡೆ ಕೊಳೆವ ನೀರು ಮೇಲಕ್ಕಾವಿ ;
ಆಕಾಶದುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಅದರ ಕಾರಣ ಬೀದಿ ;
ಅಗೆದುತ್ತ ಗದ್ದೆಗಳ ಕರ್ಮಭೂಮಿಯ ವರಣ;

GHOSTS AND PASTS

1
Secret embryos of the demon-past haunt :
in the stale air of the dark in the old buried well
they crawl upside down on all fours
and leap on the back of the shaft of sun which sings lullabies,
and go beyond into the garden of the basil bush
The navel-cords plucked at the stalk,
cut mouse-tails, they writhe on the bank,
To me who gropes with eyes stuck in darkness,
flashes, here and there, a streak of gold :
a wing-burnt star, somehow fallen, struggling in the moats of
the new-moon.

2
The day’s paper is full of the ghost, the past :
one bit above the water and seven snow-capped peaks
below;
an innocent volcano covered with snow
spitting without warning words of fire.
Fold up the paper if you will,
in soundless skeleton rooms
a carnival of reversed feet, dumb beckonings hummed
without any beat.

Stagnant in waters standing in the depths
strings of sperm beat their hands :
the lighting-pointed tail which beats the word, behind the
turning curtain of the black stage –
do they not want the colour of bush, creeper and flowers out
there in the yard ?

3
Fathers and their fathers wander without water and roof,
hanging on to the shutters of the wind they touch land
but cannot have it.
I know the ritual for exorcism and libation, but I have
forgotten the magic words:
I just play at waving the wand.
We trusted our priests and went west ;
We should dig now into our earlier logic
and into the roots and cantos of action.
As you dig, first a chrysalis of clay
push the shovel deep and strike hard
you might see the glint of the veins of ore,
One should learn a little at least now the alchemies
of extraction, of burning and decanting.
the true craft of heating hot gold into the images of one’s
own particular gods.

4
Water rots in the well ; steam rises from it :
all along the sky runs its street
the invisible point in the empty room to the dark cloud
is the embryo shape which waits through nine months –
wandering ghosts rumble, thunder-claps bring trouble –
and the rain is the present of past forms.
The labouring earth is robed in ploughed and seeded fields,
gardens of swinging fruit, ears of paddy and wheat
and the golden tops of temples and towers.

Translated from the Kannada by A.K. Ramanujan and M.G. Krishnamurthi

ಏನಾದರೂ ಮಾಡುತಿರು ತಮ್ಮ ;
ನೀ ಸುಮ್ಮನಿರಬ್ಯಾಡ ;
ಸ್ವಿಚ್ಚು; ಕಣ್ಣನು ಮುಚ್ಚು;
ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ಗತಕಾಲದಾಪತ್ತು;

ಅದೆ ನಿನ್ನ ಹೆಗ್ಗಳಿಕೆ ;

Do something, brother

Do something, brother:
keep doing something, anything;
you musn’t be idle.
Pull out this plant, nip this little leaf,
crush that flower.
There’s grass,
run a burning brand through it,
burn it like Lanka.
Tiny butterflies, parrots, sparrows?
chase them, catch them,
pluck their wings,
pull out their fur and feather.
There, in the garden,
jasmine and the banana’s gold
grow for the wild elephant’s feet.
All over the walls
virility’s master switches
itch for your fingers;
close your eyes
and pull down twenty of them.
Earth, water, the skies,
they’re all your geese with golden eggs:
gouge them out, slash them.
“Do, or die,” they say.
Disasters are the test
for your genius’s galloping dance:
something must crash every minute.
Brother, act, act at once, do something.
Thought’s weights and measures
are all for the past,
for the undying ghostly treasures of the dead.

There’s the forest,
cut it clean to the stump,
slit it for your buntings.
You have the axe, the sickle,
the saw, and the knife;
go, harvest all the world
with a flourish of your hand.
But you meet
winter mists, walls of fog,
walls that line the space between face and face,
and the road that sighs and breaks in two
under your eyes,
a couple of mountain peaks that rear their hoods
and lower upon your head,
or lightning winks from sirens
that sing in every tree:
do they plunge you into anxieties
and dilemmas of reason?
No, no, this won’t do.
You’re a simple man, and that’s your strength.
Horse sense and the blinkers
are your forte.
Eat what comes to hand; crush what you touch;
cut the hindering vines.
Mother Earth herself, though tired,
lies open to the skies;
there’s still flesh on her bone,
marrow for your hunger.
Come, come, brother,
never forget that you’re a man!

Then there’s the Well of Life.
Rope the wheel and axle,
pull out all the water.
Reach the last dryness of the rock;
grope, grope with the grappling iron.
“V for Victory,” brother.
Break down the atom,
reach for the ultimate world within.
Find God’s own arrow
and aim it straight at the heart
of God’s own embryo world.
Do something, brother,
do anything.
Idle men
are burdens on the land.
Do something, brother.
Keep doing something all the time
to lighten Mother Earth’s loads.
This is right. This is natural.
This is the one thing needful.
